Join The Bucktail Watershed Association
The Bucktail Watershed Association was formed in 2003 to cover two watersheds, the Driftwood Branch of the Sinnemahoning Creek and the First Fork of the Sinnemahoning Creek. We are a nonprofit group made up of watershed residents, camp owners, visitors to the watershed, and sportsmen who are working to improve streams in these two watersheds and to address any issues of special concern.
Accomplishments: Watershed educational signs and maps placed at state parks and Woodland Elementary School, streamside forest buffer plantings along the Driftwood Branch, Sinnemahoning Portage Creek, and Clear Creek, stream side garbage cleanups, a pollution awareness public outreach involving the development and mailing of brochures to watershed residents, the study and development of a Coldwater Conservation Plan for Hunts Run, several stream restoration projects, and trout habitat projects.
Current Projects: Aquatic insect monitoring on local streams, habitat projects in Hunts Run, involvement in the restoration of the Sinnemahoning Portage Creek and Driftwood Branch following the 2006 Norfolk Southern chemical spill, control of invasive plant species—mile a minute vine, Japanese knotweed, and purple loosestrife
Future goals: More habitat improvement projects, addressing stream bank erosion problems, planting trees in stream corridors to shade and lower stream water temperatures, continue invasive plant control activities, cleaning up acid mine drainage in Sterling Run, involvement in Norfolk Southern chemical spill settlement and restoration of affected streams, increasing membership so more can be accomplished, involving youth
We would like to invite you to join us in working to improve the streams within the Driftwood Branch and First Fork Watersheds. We are currently conducting a membership drive for the organization. Come join the ranks of the many sportsmen and concerned citizens involved in our efforts to improve the Driftwood Branch and First Fork Watersheds. Membership will place you on our mailing list so that you can be kept up-to-date with opportunities to become involved in projects that will improve our local streams. With your help we can make a difference.
